1. Department of Chemical Engineering

Founded in 1969, the Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the youngest in the University in Karlsruhe. Its creation was due to the common interests of mechanical engineers and natural scientists. In 1998, approximately 700 students are being instructed by 18 full time professors, 15 senior lecturers, and about 145 scientific staff members.

The education of chemical engineers in Karlsruhe goes back to 1928, when it became the first German university to include the study of "Chemie-Ingenieur" in the curriculum. The concept of these studies was inspired by scientists like Rudolf Plank, Emil Kirschbaum and Carl Bunte. Today, the curriculum includes three main directions of study: a) chemical engineering with an emphasis on material conversion and b) industrial process engineering with an emphasis on the design of processes, apparatus and equipment, and c) bioengineering/life-science-engineering with an emphasis on biological processes and their technical application. Common to both directions is the basic engineering education in mathematics, physics and chemistry, as well as the technical subjects of mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical engineering, material science, and mechanical construction theory. Practical courses in inorganic and organic chemistry and material science are also included.

In 1998, the Department consists of 6 institutes, with a varying number of divisions in each institute:

  • Engler-Bunte-Institut
    • Combustion Technology (Prof. Bockhorn, Prof. Zarzalis, Prof. Kolb)
    • Gas, Oil and Coal (Prof. Reimert, Prof. Schaub)
