Once your final examination results have been recorded, the process for preparing your graduation documents will begin. A formal deregistration upon request is required before your graduation documents can be issued or sent to you. Detailed information and contact persons can be found on the following website: SLE

Within the Higher Education System

Pursuant to §18 of the Study and Examination Regulations, academic and examination achievements completed in degree programs at state-run or state-recognized higher education institutions and professional academies within the Federal Republic of Germany - or at foreign state-run or state-recognized higher education institutions - may be recognized upon student's application, provided that, with regard to the competencies acquired, there is no substantial difference from the achievements or degrees they are intended to replace.

Students newly enrolled in the Master's programs in Bioengineering or in Chemical and Process Engineering must submit their application within one semester.

No deadlines apply to achievements completed within the framework of exchange programs.

Outside the Higher Education System

Knowledge acquired outside the higher education system may also be recognized. A common example is the recognition of one or more internships based on proof of relevant vocational training.

Requesting Recognition of Credits

Please request recognition via email and attach the required supporting documents (e.g. transcript of records, vocational training certificate, etc.)

Please note: Once officially recognized and recorded, acknowledgments cannot be cancelled. The grades associated with the credits to be recognized will be adopted whenever possible.

Please send completed application forms (as well as any relevant supporting documents) via email to marion gaertner does-not-exist.kit edu. Please use your KIT email address.

An overview of the counseling services and contact points at the KIT Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, as well as additional services at KIT, can be found at: https://www.ciw.kit.edu/english/2288.php

You can independently generate many certificates directly from the Campus Management System. Should you require additional certificates or confirmations (e.g. BAföG applications or for the renewal of your residence permit), please contact Mrs. Gärtner via email.

Detailed information regarding Erasmus Exchange can be found at "Study Abroad"

    Important:
    Master's Thesis Submission (DIGITAL Submission)
Master's theses with a start date on or after April 1, 2026, must be submitted digitally via the Campus Management System.

Exam registration
All academic and examination coursework must be registered online via the Campus Management System. A prerequisite for registration is that the corresponding academic or examination component has been selected within your study plan.

Exam deregistration/Withdrawal
For written examinations, a registration may be revoked - without stating a reason - up until the start of the exam (i.e. the distribution of exam questions). You have the following options for deregistration:
If possible: deregistration via the Campus Management System
In person: deregistration in the lecture hall on the day of the exam
Email: deregistration via email to the examiner

For oral examinations, deregistration must be declared to the examiner at least three (3) working days prior to the scheduled exam date.

Important: Once an examination has begun, deregistration is possible only in exceptional cases (e.g. illness) and requires the submission of appropriate supporting documentation (e.g. a medical certificate) to the relevant Examination Board immediately.

The Student Services Department is responsible for registration and deregistration. Further information can be found on the linked pages. Should you have any questions, please contact your designated contact person at the Student Services directly.

Students pursuing their studies under the 2025 Study and Examination Regulations may complete their study plan online:

Link to the online-form: Studienplan Master BIW

The form is automatically forwarded to the Master's Examination Board. Once the form has been received and the study plan has been approved, your selected specializations and modules will be registered for you in the Campus Management System.

Changes to an approved study plan are possible:

Under "My Forms" you can edit and resubmit a form you have previously completed.

Please note:

  • If you wish to make a change, you must not be registered for the module in question within the Campus Management System.
  • Once an examination has been taken, this module can no longer be modified or moved to a different category (e.g. Specialization subject).

Specialization Subject:

  • If you wish to make a change, you must not be registered for the module in question within the Campus Management System.
  • The mandatory module associated with the Specialization subject cannot be changed.
  • Once you have taken an examination in any module belonging to the Specialization subject, the Specialization subject itself can no longer be changed. Other modules within the Specialization subject may still be changed.
  • Once an examination has been taken, this module can no longer be modified or moved to a different category (e.g. an other Specialization subject).

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Gärtner (marion gaertner∂kit edu).

The study plan for the Master's programs in CIW and BIW (SPO 2016) must be fully completed and submitted via email to Marion Gärtner for approval prior to taking the first examination in the Technical Electives or the Specialization Subjects. The form for the study plan can be found here.

Once the study plan has been approved, your selections will be entered into the Campus Management System, and you will then be able to register for examinations.

Changes to an approved study plan are possible:

Technical Electives:

Technical Elective).

BIW and CIW (SPO 2016)

If interdisciplinary qualifications are completed at the House of Competence (HoC) or the Language Center, the achievement is automatically recorded in the Campus Management System under the section "not assigned grades".

If an achievement from the "not assigned grades" is to be credited toward your degree, you must complete the form "Request for transfer of not assigned grades" (see the "Application Forms" folder), and submit it via email to the Master's Examination Board (marion gaertner does-not-exist.kit edu).

Interdisciplinary qualifications that are not taken at the HoC or the Language Center, must, in all cases, be registered with Mrs Gärtner prior to the examination. To do so, please provide the module number (not lecture number) and title. This allows the module to be added to your study plan, enabling you to register for the examination online. If the module does not have a module number, the achievement will be manually recorded after the examination has been taken. For this process, the following information - which the examiner may submit via email - is required: examination date, grade, credit points (LP), and the module title in both German and English.

BIW (SPO 2025)

In the BIW degree program a total of 4 credits must be achieved. 2 credits must be selected from the "good scientific practice" category, while the remaining 2 credits may be freely chosen at e.g. the HoC or the Language Center (see BIW/CIW SPO 2016).

General Information: What constitutes a interdisciplinary qualification (key competency)?

According to the definition provided by the NRW Education Commission (1995), key competencies are:
"...acquirable general skills, attitudes, and elements of knowledge that are useful in solving problems and acquiring new competencies across the widest possible range of subject areas, thereby fostering a capacity for action that enables individuals to meet both personal and societal demands."

The term "key competencies" refers to transversal qualifications - skills that extend beyond specific disciplines - intended to empower individuals to act effectively. Consequently, they do not constitute specialized subjects knowledge in themselves; rather, they enable the competent application and handling of such specialized knowledge. Key competencies comprise a broad spectrum of overarching skills derived from both, the cognitive and affective domains. These competencies can be applied and transferred flexibly and innovatively across a variety of situations and functional roles.

Relevant courses and workshops can be attended - and the corresponding competencies acquired - at institutions such as FORUM, HoC, SPZ. This approach is also recommended by the Department. Given the extensive range of options available, neither the Study and Examination Regulations (SPO) nor the Module Handbook impose any restrictions regarding the selection of key competencies.

In order to take courses resp. examinations as additional achievements, the approval of the responsible examiner is generally required.

To enable you to register for the additional examinations in the standard manner via the Campus Management System, you must contact Mrs Gärtner; provided that the necessary approval has been obtained, she can add the relevant module to the "Additional Achievements" of your study plan.
